The Team

Melanie

As a child I always said I was going to be a “French Fry lady” and run my own chip truck!  Even then it seems, I had an entrepreneurial spirit!

One day while living in Vancouver, I decided to book into a spa to have a pedicure and oh how I loved it! I felt so relaxed and pampered, and clearly remember thinking I wanted to make others feel that way too.

At 23, I moved back to my hometown of Kingston and went to school in Ottawa to become an Esthetician.

Once I finished my training I opened my own business. Over the years I have had my business in three different locations.  Each one has been a joy to work in and I have had the pleasure of being alongside some wonderful women. Each and every one of them has taught me something over the years.

At the age of 38 I had the opportunity to work in the Esthetics Program at St Lawrence College, which I loved. But, while it was very fulfilling, I missed the hands-on work with my clients, and I knew it would not be long until I was back being creative.

One day, my dear friend Tamara called and asked if she might be able to come and work with me at my location downtown.

At that point I had decided that it was time to move location once more! Tamara and I decided to become business partners and move our business to Portsmouth Village.......and The Village Spa and Hair Boutique was born.

I feel truly blessed that I found a career that makes me so happy. My clients have become friends and I genuinely enjoy nothing more than making them feel extra pampered.

This location has been so well received - we could not be happier and really look forward to your visit soon.

Tamara

I'm so lucky that I get to work - and do what I love.

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a real interest for what's in fashion and for playing and experimenting with hair. Whether it be working on my Barbie doll or my Fashion Heads (!), I would spend hours fussing with styles - even cutting them if they needed it! - and applying and re-applying their make-up!

As I got older, my family and friends became my new canvas - hair cuts, Sun-In (remember that?!), colouring and styling for everything from proms and parties to weddings. I was their go-to girl.

Getting my creative juices flowing really excites me and I just love using my talent to make everyone feel better about themselves.

As a hairstylist for more than 20 years and now a salon owner, I am extremely grateful and happy with the path my life and career has taken. My clients' happiness is first and foremost, and I feel so much pride when I see their big smiles, or that little sparkle in their eye.

When you love what you do, it's never 'work'.

Tarissa

Helping people feel their best on the inside, and out, is the main reason why I love what I do.

Ever since I can remember, I have been captivated by make up, skin care and the beauty of colour. Playing with make up as a child, quickly turned into an obsession, and a serious passion, which then became my career and my life.

Born and raised in Kingston, I became an Aesthetician in 2009 after graduating from St. Lawrence College. Since then, I have furthered my education in Professional Sugaring Hair Removal as well as with Dermalogica Canada as a Skin Therapist. In 2016, I was awarded Best Aesthetician in Kingston. Over the years, I have fallen in love  with the science of the skin, and the chemistry of skin care ingredients. Knowledge & education is key in the beauty industry these days. It pushes me to focus on the positive & visible results in my treatment room, while keeping my guests as relaxed and comfortable as possible.

If Im not at The Village Spa, you can find me at my cottage, with loved ones or travelling to new places. "The choices we make in the care given to ourselves daily, is as beautiful as the end result."

Marni

After more than 22 years in the business – I still love what I do!

But, I didn’t start out planning to go into the beauty business. At St Lawrence College in Kingston, I actually studied 'Corrections' – the analysis of criminal behaviour – and it was during this time; where I learned so much about the challenges some can face; that I began to long for a fun way to meet people and more importantly, to find a way to make them feel good about themselves and smile.

I took the leap, and enrolled into a private hairstyling school, then, having got the bug, followed this with training at Vidal Sassoon in Toronto and Tony and Guy in London, England.

During this time I was fortunate enough to work with a number of renowned stylists, such as the late John Steinberg.

Now, I feel so very grateful to work with people I call my friends.

Every day is different but the buzz of creativity is always in the air.

It might sound corny, but, for me, The Village is my home away from home. If you can’t find me there, there’s only one place I will be – I’ll be back very soon, I’m just out walking my dog Fritz!

Heidi

I was THAT girl, always doing her friends’ hair and over-experimenting with her own!

I was really lucky to have spent my formative years training at Vidal Sassoon which not only gave me the foundation skills that would last my whole career but also the drive to always strive for excellence.

I have been blessed to have worked and trained with some of the finest people in the business. After many years of hairdressing in the U.K. and after a baby break, I worked for an award-winning salon, Indigo Rye, alongside many talented, inspirational people.

I quickly rose through the ranks to manager and artistic director, training staff and working with the art team.

After eight amazing years there, and leaving with a wealth of knowledge, I moved to Canada with my family and started work at Echo where, again, I was lucky to join a team of wonderful, talented people.

Now, here at The Village, under the same roof as like-minded people who are always evolving, has been a dream. I love that every day is different, from precision cuts and bouncy blow-outs to creative colour, wedding hair or that perfect set of highlights.

I aim to give every client a bespoke service in a beautiful, relaxing haven that will look as good at home as when they leave our salon.
